Preparing for your retreat

Good preparation makes a real difference. Not because you can control what happens during the experience, but because arriving rested, clear about your intentions, and with the right things in your bag means you can give your full attention to what matters.

Below is everything you need, grouped by topic. If something is not covered here, write to us — we would rather answer a question now than have you arrive uncertain.

Preparing for your retreat at La Mezquita

Diet in the days before

In the three days before the retreat, eat simply. Avoid alcohol, recreational drugs, and heavy processed food. For ayahuasca specifically, there is a dietary protocol (the dieta) that we will send you after your screening call — it requires a little more care and a longer lead time.

On the day of the retreat, eat a light lunch and nothing after that. We provide dinner at the centre before the ceremony begins.

Medication and health

Some medications interact with psychedelics, and some health conditions require us to think carefully about whether a retreat is appropriate for you right now. This is what the screening call is for. Please do not stop or adjust any medication without speaking to your own doctor.

If you are unsure whether something on your medication list is relevant, mention it during screening. We have a psychologist on the team and we take this conversation seriously.

Setting your intentions

You do not need a perfectly formed intention before you arrive. But it helps to spend some time with the question: what brought you here? What do you want to understand, or change, or let go of?

Write it down if that helps. Bring it with you. The facilitators will ask you about it before the ceremony, and you can share as much or as little as you want.

What to bring

Comfortable clothes you can lie down in. Layers — the ceremony space can be cool overnight. Any personal items that feel meaningful or grounding. A notebook if you like to write. We provide bedding, towels, and everything else you need for the night.

Getting here and what to expect on arrival

The retreat centre is in the mountains above El Campello, about 20 minutes from Alicante. We will send you exact directions after your booking is confirmed. Most people drive or take a taxi — there is parking at the centre. You should arrive at the time we agree during booking, and there is no need to rush.

When you arrive, there will be time to settle and have something to eat before anything else happens. The pace is unhurried.
